The spaceport bottleneck
A 2025 Idaho National Laboratory report found:
"the U.S. lacks a nuclear-capable launch processing facility for fission systems at Kennedy Space Center, Cape Canaveral Space Force Station, or any other major national launch site. This gap risks delaying any fielded reactor, regardless of technical readiness."
Radioisotope power systems, fission surface power, and nuclear propulsion all create unique demands that ordinary spaceport operations and payload processing may not be able to absorb. Launchworks exists to catalyze nuclear-ready spaceports before it becomes the bottleneck that stops missions.
